Saulieu (Burgundy, France)
Sitting proudly on the main street of Saulieu in Burgundy (a town that’s been around since Roman times, and is perhaps best known as the home of famed chef Bernard Loiseau), Hôstellerie de la Tour d’Auxois is set in a former 16th century convent. If you’re cashed up, a trip to Le Relais Bernard Loiseau should head up your to-do list, but affordable dinner and room prices at la Tour d’Auxois make this dining destination an attractive alternative when touring through Burgundy.
A gorgeous, traditional dining room with plenty of natural light is the perfect setting to enjoy classic Burgundian dishes. A variety of menus and local wines are available appealing to all budgets, and service is friendly although can be slow in busier periods. In summer, enjoy dining in the courtyard and watching the sun going down over Saulieu.
Despite its central location, the small rooms – a slightly odd match of décor – are surprisingly quiet. In the heat of summer, the air-conditioning is a welcome addition, as is the hotel’s outdoor pool and deck. In cooler months, enjoy a drink in the lounge by the fireplace. Service is professional, although not particularly personal or warm.
