Le Cap Ferret (Atlantic Coast, France)
Set among fishing shacks and oyster farms, La Maison du Bassin (on the Bassin d’Arcachon) is a rustic and charming destination in Le Cap Ferret only an hour or so drive from Bordeaux. The area has become a favourite among French celebrities and Parisians looking for a relaxing and authentic seaside escape; and if you love oysters, ocean views and blue skies, you’ll be drawn to this place too.
Dinner is served on the leafy terrace or in the comfortable dining room replete with seaside vibes and warm hospitality. Menus and a la carte options are available, with seafood (think oysters and juicy scallops), local products (foie gras des Landes and caviar from Gironde) and seasonal ingredients taking centre stage. Do, however, leave room for the dessert buffet which is nothing short of epic in flavour, fancy and presentation.
The eleven guest rooms are basic in terms of amenities (no television or tea and coffee making facilities), but are comfortable, generously sized and peaceful. The balcony upgrades are worthwhile if you’ve got cash to splash; as is breakfast, which is a typically French spread including delicious and plentiful coffee, plus fresh bread, luscious butter and a mix of viennoiserie for the gourmands among us. And while we’re talking extras, we recommend grabbing a pre-dinner cocktail at the adjacent bar and playing a round of billards.
